Thrift Inspiration
I love that slow fashion is gaining more awareness and practitioners. Opting for second-hand first is a great strategy when adding to one’s wardrobe. You can’t always find what you’re looking for, but I love having second-hand as a first line of defense against fast-fashion and over-consumption.
One thing I have found as I have aged, is that my personal style has become less defined. Especially after lockdown, I have noticed that my daily choices favor the blah. In an effort to explore and refine my wardrobe and how I wear it, I have been perusing YouTube for the gals that get it. I want stylish, intentional vloggers who can help me on my journey but who also incorporate thrifting into their process. There are so many fashion bloggers out there, but here are three YouTubers who are helping me on my personal style journey while still prioritizing second-hand.
Jillian Felice
I love Jillian for so many reasons. She is adventurous with clothing, leaning into color and pattern in a way that calls to me, but also she reviews what is on the runways and how to find those pieces in your closet or the thrift store. I could watch her thrift haul videos all day. Her styling of pieces is incredibly inspirational and I feel better equipped to spot something fantastic amidst the sea of thrift store racks.
Hannah Louise Poston
For the past few months, I have been wading through Hannah’s backlog, watching as many of her fashion videos as possible. Her relaxed but well researched videos feel so approachable and informative. She has a beautiful way of inspiring me to buy less but to still be creative with the clothes I have. Her personal style is very different from mine, but she is such an advocate for each person exploring their own preferences and offers tips on how to approach that process. I am a huge fan.
Laura VonV
Laura is incredible about offering deep dives into specific brands. Her videos are a wellspring of technical information and helpful when trying to understand what makes quality and what to look for when considering any garment, but especially those in a thrift store. I love that she is honest, even about brands who gift her products to try, and is truly a guide for quality.
I know I still have a long way to go before I will feel confident that I have a finger on what my style is today… which, of course, will likely continue to change as I continue to change. But through this process, I hope I can understand myself better, my personal style better, and how those two communicate.
This style quiz from the New York Stylist has been a fantastic starting point. At first, I could not believe it said my primary style type is boho with a secondary of sporty. But when I looked up her recommended style icons for inspiration, it was spot on. I now have an entire Pinterest board dedicated to this specific part of my journey, trying to gather and assess what outfits compel and resonate with who I am now. Hannah has a great video about how she went about this process.
I am still of the hunt for guides on this winding path, so please share any favorite fashion vloggers in the comments. I would also love to hear about how you incorporate second-hand into your wardrobe-building process.
